Adult Education

Philosophy/Purpose
The Tikvat Israel adult education program includes educational courses, workshops, lectures, and other learning opportunities to enrich the cultural and spiritual lives of our congregants. The classes are generally 3-4 sessions in length and are designed for members who are unfamiliar with traditional services and customs, as well as those who are well educated in and knowledgeable about Conservative Judaism. Single-day lectures and workshops are meant to appeal to all TI members.

Please contact Adult Education Committee Chairs Betsy Nahum-Miller and Susan Apter for further information. We welcome your suggestions and input.

  • So You Think You Can DANCE DAVEN

This is a series of workshops for all kinds of daveners. Perhaps you attend minyan, and you'd like to understand the service in more depth and participate more fully. Maybe you began to lead the daily service when you were saying kaddish; you had to learn "on the job", by copying others and by trial and error, and you suspect you're missing some of the finer details of the art. Or you are an experienced davener - you'd like to to hone your skills and learn even more. Here's what's in store:

History of tefillah. Structure of the daily services. B'rachot and responses. The Torah service. How to take an aliyah. Customs and rituals. Guidelines and tips for service leaders, Torah readers, and regular daveners. Nusakh (the music of prayer) and how to use it.

There will be handouts, including a glossary and internet resources.
MIDI files of sheet music are available via email for registered students.

  • God and Torah: The Guidance of Modern Jewish Thinkers

Thursdays, December 1 and December 8, 2011 at 8:00 PM

Rabbi David Rose will teach this class. Modernity has historically confronted Judaism with the need to adapt. Four 20th century philosophers, Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, Abraham Joshua Heschel, and Mordechai Kaplan, met this challenge with new concepts of God and Torah. Through their writings, this course will examine how their integration of tradition and modernity can guide us as individuals.

After initially sinking into a deep depression, the group organizes an effective communal unit to begin rebuilding the kibbutz.
