New Havurah Meeting

Sunday - Nov 9, 2008

Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Location: Tikvat Israel room TBA

Contact: Amy Matathias

A havurah (friendship group) is a great way to get to know other members of the congregation. Havurot have flourished at Tikvat Israel for many years, resulting in many life-long relationships.

The idea of havurot was developed by Rabbi Mordeccai Kaplan, founder of the Reconstructionist Movement. His concept was to get small Jewish groups to band together for study and observance of Jewish rituals and life cycle events.

A Havurah group can be a lot of fun and a great way to make new friends. If you are interested in being part of a group with other Tikvat Israel members or would like to meet other Tikvat Israel members with children close in age to your children please keep reading.

At Tikvat Israel, each havurah group is self-directed, planning its activities based on the interests of its members. Some groups are more social in nature, while others focus more on religious, family, or study-related activities. They may even take the form of a book club. Past activities of Tikvat Israel havurot have included Shabbat dinners, Havdalah services, pot-luck dinners, book discussions, sports (bowling, skating, etc.), musical or theater events, movies, and holiday celebrations.

There will be a meeting November 9th at 10 am to discuss the idea of havurot and form groups. We will discuss how to start havurah planning.

If you have any questions you can call me at 301.570.4496 or email me at matathi@aol.com. Please fill out an interest form. The form is currently available on the TI Website at (http://tikvatisrael.org/community/havurot.html)
