Israeli Film Fest Returns to TI.........posted Dec 25, 2006
Congregation Tikvat Israel will hold its second annual Israeli Film Fest with a series of three films on consecutive Saturday evenings in January.
All films will be shown at 8 p.m. at the synagogue, located at 2200 Baltimore Road, Rockville.
Tickets for each film are $10 for Tikvat Israel members and $12 for the general public. Reservations are requested by calling 301-762-7338
A moderator will provide insights about each film and lead a discussion following each showing.
The festival schedule is as follows:
- Ushpizin, Jan. 13
A heartwarming and humorous Israeli drama set in the customarily closed world of ultra-Orthodox Jews, "Ushpizin" is the story of Moshe and Malli, a married couple, who are suffering through a financial crisis. Naturally they pray for help, but instead of a miracle, two suspicious strangers with criminal pasts appear on their doorstep. The couple believes their guests were sent to them by God as a test of faith.
The film is reportedly the first made by members of the Israeli ultra-Orthodox community.
Dessert and coffee will be served after the film during a stimulating discussion led by moderator Sheila Jelen, assistant professor of English at the Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies, University of Maryland, College Park.
- The Syrian Bride, Jan. 20
Nominated for seven Israeli Academy Awards, this moving drama from Israeli filmmaker Eran Riklis features a young Israeli woman, Mona, engaged to Syrian TV star Tallel. Mona must face the fact that marriage to her betrothed in Syria will mean that once she crosses the border between Israel and Syria to marry she will never be allowed back to her beloved family in Majdal Shams, the largest Druze village in the Golan Heights. But when she gets to the border and is set to begin her new life, some surprises await her.
The Syrian Bride is a story about physical, mental and emotional borders and the will to cross them. A story about a family trying to cope with its ability to define boundaries and deal with them, focusing on Mona's sister Amal, a modern woman trapped in a tradition and culture she wants to escape.
A moving and emotional film, Syrian Bride exposes the subtle truths and everyday conflict in the Middle East.
Dessert and coffee will be available after the film along with a stimulating discussion with moderator Eric Zakim, associate professor of Hebrew language and culture and director of the Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies at University of Maryland, College Park.
- Colombian Love, Jan. 27
Described as an Israeli version of Four Weddings and a Funeral, this romantic comedy from television director Shai Kannot (Tik Sagur) follows three characters as they navigate the precipitous boundaries between love, lust and friendship. The characters' complex solutions are entertaining and offer insight into Israeli attitudes toward love and relationships.
With Nir Levy, Assi Cohen, and Mili Avital (The Human Stain). In Hebrew with English subtitles.
Dessert and coffee will be available after the film along with a stimulating discussion with moderator Eric Zakim, associate professor of Hebrew language and culture and director of the Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies at University of Maryland, College Park.
