Words Will Fly at TI Talk Fest.........posted Feb 20, 2006
Two former TI presidents -- Harold Diamond and Clifford Fishman -- will square off against each other and at least five others in a public speaking contest on March 5 in the synagogue's sanctuary. The showdown follows morning minyan, which starts at 9 a.m.
The contest is sponsored by Tikvat Israel's Toastmasters Club known as Hopeful Talkers.
This is the club's second annual speech competition, which was captured a year ago by Jeff Smith. He subsequently progressed through three levels of Toastmaster competitions.
Also competing at TI will be several other accomplished speakers including congregants Robert Katz and Julie Boynton, both of whom speak professionally as part of their careers. Louise Chatlynne will enter her first talkfest but is a veteran Toastmaster. Rounding out the field of eight entrants is John Melmed, who has won numerous Toastmaster speech contests over the last 10 years.
The competition is open to others, but you first must become a member of the Hopeful Talkers. A panel of experienced Toastmasters will judge the speeches for their content and delivery. The speeches given are generally motivational or inspirational with a firm moral or lesson for the audience. A strict time criterion of 5 to 7 minutes for each speech is a requirement.
