A wonderful week in the Poconos with Hazak!.........posted Jul 2, 2006

Nathan and I have just returned from a wonderful week in the Poconos at a Hazak retreat, which took place at Block & Hexter Vacation Center. Beautiful grounds, a lake that shimmered in the sunlight, flowers and trees everywhere. Cool nights and warm days with a breeze coming off the lake. We were greeted by the organizers (one came up on the bus with us) who had planned and arranged it so that our week was filled with activities, to do as little or as much as we desired, were superb.

  • Exercise: Swimming, Water Aerobics, Yoga, Tai Chi, Shuffle Board and much more.
  • Arts and Crafts, Israeli dancing, computer classes and someone always ready to teach and assist if you needed help.
  • Lectures: Five wonderful people, one who made us laugh about ourselves in the tradition of Literary Jewish Humor. Another told us of 5 who changed the course of Jewish history and another who took us from the Spanish Inquisition to the present day events. The Rabbi conducted services and led discussions on many topics that we as grandparents face today. He also lectured on The Story of Ruth. An Israeli from Kibbutz Negba, one of the oldest Kibbutzim in Israel, brought us up to date on life on the Kibbutzim today.

There was a movie one day, and evenings with delightful games, dancing and music, and entertainment. One evening we discovered that there were gifted musicians, singers and dancers who were guests, among us.

Meals were excellent and those serving us, teaching us and caring for our needs came from everywhere. Young people from China, Peru, Israel, Russia, France, Australia, England and New Zealand saw to our needs in the dining hall, and the chef was from Thai Land. Our only complaint was "too much food". The result, all meals were to be buffet. Sorry folks you must now serve yourselves.

The best part of our stay, "The feeling of family that emanated from all who were there."

Guests came from Silver Spring, MD, Virginia, Connecticut, New York, and Florida. Wish you could have joined us.
