New Patio, New Torah ... and a $1M Budget.........posted Jul 9, 2006
TI members approved the synagogue's $1.04 million spending plan for 2006-07 at a congregational meeting on June 25.
The proposed budget had been approved for submission to the congregation by the TI Board of Directors on June 7.
Congregants also approved a plan to build for a completely new patio, front steps and walkway outside the building's main entrance by Sept. 1. The approximately $55,000 expenditure will be financed by a loan from the Temple Israel Foundation. Congregants approved a motion that the money be repaid with proceeds from the forthcoming sale of land behind the shul to a housing developer.
On the latter matter, congregants were told the land sale is moving along according to plan. Co-President Jayme Sokolow said the sale may be finalized in October or November.
Congregants also gave their OK to a proposal to create a Torah fund-raising campaign. The goal is to raise money to buy a Torah in honor of the 10th anniversary of the merger of Temple Israel and Beth Tikva into Tikvat Israel in 1997. A new Torah scroll generally costs $30,000 or more.
The campaign also will raise dollars to maintain TI's current Torahs in a kosher state on an ongoing basis, support educational needs at TI and to support other TI''s activities related to religious and educational programming.
