USY President Named Top Scholastic Journalist.........posted Mar 30, 2006
Melissa Apter, who serves as president of the United Synagogue Youth chapter at TI, has been named the Journalism Education Association's Maryland State Journalist of the Year.
Melissa is a senior at Rockville High School, where she is editor in chief of the online edition of the school's newspaper, the Rampage. She plans to major in journalism in college.
She is the daughter of Susan and Alan Apter.
Peter Daddone, adviser of the Rockville newspaper Rampage, has taught Melissa for four years. He said: "Her ability to succeed, regardless of the project, amplifies her motivation. Because of her, our website gained national recognition.
"Her talents are too numerous to mention, and I am proud to have assisted her on her climb up the journalism ladder," Daddone said.
Melissa said, "I became sucked into journalism in 8th grade when I began receiving copies of the Rampage in homeroom. I found my niche in news a few years later, and now I am editor-in-chief."
She also contributes articles to the print edition. "The journalism seed that’s been planted in me since middle school, will, I hope, carry me into a long, meaningful career in journalism," she said.
The online student newspaper can be accessed at www.rockvillerampage.com. The publication has been named one of seven finalists for the National Scholastic Press Association online Pacemaker Award, which will be announced at the NSPA convention in mid-April in San Francisco, which Melissa will attend.
