Softball Skid Continues as Streak Hits Six.........posted May 24, 2006

The second half of the season in the Montgomery County synagogue league has been unkind to Tikvat Israel.

The softballers have now dropped six games in a row, leading up to the final doubleheaders of the season on June 4 and 11.

The TI team has been shorthanded in the field in most of its recent games because of lack of available players. (Knowledgeable sources indicated that a member of the synagogue clergy turned down a lucrative offer from team management to roam the outfield grass during the remaining games.)

In its most recent encounters on May 21, TI lost both games to Temple Emanuel, 22-16 and 18-17. "Again, we were short of players, which made it difficult to defend against Temple Emanuel's powerful and younger hitters," said Marc Schneider, team manager.

The six consecutive lossess have jeopardized the team's chances to make the post-season playoffs.

One week earlier, Tikvat Israel lost both ends of its doubleheader to Norbeck Meadows (the only non-house of worship in the league), 18-5 and 19-7. TI played both games with nine players (softball allows a 10th fielder), leaving wide gaps in the outfield.

"On the bright side, we welcomed a new addition to the team, Will Hochman," the manager reported. "Will showed a lot of speed in the outfield and an ability to get on base consistently. We expect him to be a great contributor."

TI's final two doubleheaders are slated for the mornings of June 4 and June 11, respectively, against Beth Ami at Mill Creek Park in Gaithersburg (Shady Grove Road at Mid-County Highway) and Shaare Tefila at Johnson Park in Gaithersburg.
