About 100 members of Tikvat Israel, from school-age youngsters to senior citizens, spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon (April 30) on the National Mall for the Save Darfur rally.
Organized by the TI Social Action Committee, the congregants rode together on Metro’s Red Line and carried hand-made signs demanding action by the governments of the world to take immediate measures to halt the genocide under way in the western region of the African nation.
Although the rally’s turnout wasn’t large by Washington standards, the gathering drew a wide range of religious groups and political advocacy groups. The Washington Post, in its website story, called the event "unique for being one of the most diverse rallies the capital has seen in years. Most demonstrations usually attract a uniform crowd, who often share the same political, religious and ethnic makeup."
