Rabbi to Recount African Adventures in Pre-Selichot.........posted Sep 11, 2006
Rabbi Howard Gorin's African adventures will be retold to congregants during the pre-Selichot program at 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in the Tikvat Israel sanctuary.
"Links in a Chain: The Jews of Nigeria" is the title of the rabbi's one-hour illustrated travelogue, which will precede Selichot services at midnight. A dessert reception begins at 10:30 p.m. in the synagogue's library lobby. All congregants, young and old, are invited.
During his travelogue, Rabbi Gorin will speak about his two visits to the Jewish communities in Nigeria, the most recent of which took place in winter 2006. He will share the insights he gained about the lives of the Jews who live in Nigeria and the impact of the Tikvat Israel Africa Project.
The rabbi also has announced his plans to ship some 200 books on Jewish religious life and culture to Bristol, England, to Rabbi Natan Levy, a Jewish chaplain at the University of the West of England located in Bristol, England. Samples of the books collected by the rabbi can be found at http://rabbihowardgorin.org/Natan.html.
