Tzedakah Panel Assigns Almost $6,000 to Service Needs.........posted Jul 4, 2007

Tikvat Israel's tzedakah collection this year totalled $5,588.45, and a half dozen Washington-area human service agencies will be the beneficiaries.

The synagogue's tzedakah committee, chaired by David Gantz, annually releases a report to the congregation at the conclusion of the fiscal year (June 30) accounting for its collections and allocation decisions.

Gantz's report on 2006-07 collections listed the following sources of charity:

  • $3,993.45 from morning and evening minyanim as well as individual donations
  • $1,080 from Pesach Maot Chitim
  • $515 from Purim canisters
The committee allocated $5,569, leaving $148.90 in carryover funds in the account.

This year's beneficiaries of Tikvat Israel charity included these organizations: Montgomery County Hunger Relief, Mazon, Project Hope, Israel Free Loan Association, Manna Food Bank, Shepherd's Table, African Jewish Community-Hadassah Infant School, Save a Child's Heart, Alyn Hospital, Hazon Yeshya (Israeli Food Bank), Fisher House (local support for U.S. service members), Shalom Bayit and Friends of the Israel Defense Forces.

"The Tzedakah Chavurah has been able to make such allocations because of the generosity of the Tikvat Israel congregants," Gantz said in his report.

Joining Gantz on the committee are Madeleine Oakley, Dan Jacobs, Hope Kott, Jerry Dunietz, Mike Nash and Robbi Cohen.
