USY Mission Leads to New Orleans for Pair.........posted Jun 4, 2007

Amalia Cowan, daughter of Elliot and Bonnie Cowan of Rockville, and Lynn Berk, the TI director of youth and family programming, are participating in the Seaboard Region USY Mission to New Orleans for Volunteer Disaster Relief from June 18-23.

Seaboard Region is taking 76 USYers and eight staff to volunteeer with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild housing that was damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Each member of the group, including the staff, raised $700 to cover their expenses.

While they are in New Orleans, in addition to their work with Habitat, they will tour New Orleans, participate in a scavenger hunt in the French Quarter, eat dessert at the world-renowned Cafe Dumond and spend some time with the members of Shir Chadash, a Conservative shul in the vicinity.

Berk said the two of them will report to the congregation on their relief mission sometime this fall.
