Congregant Cited for Her Inclusion Work.........posted May 18, 2007

TI member Mary Meyerson, who works as religious school director at Oseh Shalom Synagogue in Laurel, has been accorded the 2007 Heroes In My Eyes Award by the ARC of Howard County.

Meyerson, who has served in this role since 2003, received the honor this month at the ARC's Celebration of Excellence awards dinner. The award honors individuals whose work ensures people with cognitive and developmental disabilities are included in their communities. Meyerson has seen increasing numbers of students with disabilities, including Autism and Learning Disabilities, all of whom are mainstreamed.

Meyerson has a degree in social work from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. Additionally, she studied for more than two years before her conversion with Rabbi Eugene J. Lipman, z"l, of Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C.

Before coming to Oseh Shalom, she taught Judaics and Hebrew for 10 years at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda. There she also led the Shabbat morning minyan for students in grades K-3 and their families and was the Torah School's Family Education Specialist.

From 2000-2002, she served as the education director at Adat Shalom. Subsequently, she established her own business as a Jewish educational consultant and provided services to a number of Washington-area congregations.

Additionally, she has 12 years of experience as a preschool teacher and two years of experience as a Resource Specialist for the Board of Jewish Education.

Mary and husband Neal live in the Wheaton/Aspen Hill area. They have a son, Phillip, and a daughter, Rebecca.
