Congregants Goldin and Bachman to be Feted on Simchat Torah.........posted Sep 8, 2007
Shelly Goldin, former president of Tikvat Israel, and Danny Bachman, chair of the synagogue's M'kom Torah Campaign, have been selected as "Kallah Bereshit" and "Hattan Torah," respectively, by the synagogue's Religious Practices Committee.
Shelly and Danny will be honored with special aliyot during the Torah service on Simchat Torah on Fri., Oct. 5, and at a luncheon in their honor in the TI Social Hall following services.
Literally "the bride and groom of the Torah," the honors are accorded each year to two members who have made significant contributions to the synagogue's spiritual, educational and cultural life.
Shelly, a member of Tikvat Israel for 18 years, has served in various leadership roles, including a three-year stint at congregational president earlier this decade. Previously, she was Sisterhood treasurer and Torah Fund vice president. She also was regional president for Women's American ORT in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as president of Seaboard Region for the Women's League of Conservative Judaism.
During her tenure as synagogue president, Shelly developed a reputation for her wonderful stories from the pulpit, weaving together strands from her childhood in Brooklyn, her extensive business travels to foreign countries, her family life and her encounters with interesting people, and tying them in with the week's parasha or a comment by a bar or bat mitzvah.
Professionally, she works for the American Psychological Association.
Danny joined Tikvat Israel eight years ago with his family when they moved to Rockville from Philadelphia. He was the chair of last year's successful M'kom Torah campaign, which raised almost $270,000 to purchase a new Torah and to provide funds for other Torah-related activities at TI.
He has been a member of the TI governing board since 2004 and was previously co-chair of the Religious School Committee. He also reads Torah and regularly serves as a bimah Gabbai for Shabbat and High Holiday services.
Danny has long been active in Jewish life. He is a graduate of Gratz College Hebrew High School, lived in Israel for two years (working in the Ministry of Finance) and was an active member of the Germantown Jewish Centre in Philadelphia before moving to Rockville.
Professionally, he is an economist with the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he works on the economic outlook and other domestic issues.
In making the award announcements, Sam Freedenberg, chair of the Religious Practices Committee, said: "Yasher koach to Shelly and to Danny, both of whom have given enormously of their time and energy to the synagogue over many years. Their dedication, enthusiasm and creativity have helped make Tikvat Israel a special place and M'kom Torah, and they are inspirations to their fellow congregants."
He added: "Shelly's stories remind us that we are a people with a great story, told in our Torah. And Danny's successful leadership in our Torah campaign this past year reminds us that turning dreams and visions into realities always requires someone willing to take on the big job and to work hard to get it done."
