Tzedakah Group Parcels $5,700 in Charitable Gifts Near and Far.........posted Aug 7, 2008

Congregants and visitors to Tikvat Israel during the past year contributed nearly $5,900 in tzedakah ? funds that are now being contributed to a variety of charitable causes locally and globally.

In his annual report to the congregation, David Gantz, longtime chair of the TI Tzedakah Chavurah, said the FY '08 charity collection totaled $5,892 from the following sources:

* $4,022.53 from morning and evening minyanim as well as individual donations;

* $1,357 from Pesach Maot Chitim; and

* $512.47 from the Purim Canisters.

The committee has made allocations totaling $5,652 to the following organizations: Montgomery County Hunger Relief, Mazon, Project Hope, Israel Free Loan Association, Manna Food Bank, Shepherd's Table, Temple Ahavat Achim in Florida, The African Jewish Community-Hadassah Infant School, Save a Child's Heart, Alyn Hospital, Solar Cooking Fund - Jewish World Watch, Meir Panim and the Washington Area Fuel Fund

"The Tzedakah Chavurah has been able to make such allocations because of the hearts of the Tikvat Israel congregants," Gantz said. "I say, 'Thank you to all.'"

Joining Gantz on the Chavurah, which decides each year on the charitable targets, are Madeleine Oakley, Dan Jacobs, Hope Kott, Mike Nash, Robbi Cohen and Elyse Bernstein.
