ArtSites Finds a Home.........posted Oct 1, 2008

While the Jewish people wandered in the desert for 40 years before they reached the Promised Land, it has taken ArtSites, the guild for Judaic Artists, only 24 years to find a permanent home! The newly named ArtSites Gallery will permanently move into the Tikvat Israel gift shop, located at 2200 Baltimore Road in Rockville, MD. Look for our opening event.

ArtSites was founded in 1984 by fiber artist Shirley Waxman for the purpose of sharing ideas and opportunities among a diverse group of Jewish artists who usually worked individually in their own studios. The ArtSites name was chosen to be a play on words because there was no actual permanent site in sight. For the past 24 years, ArtSites has provided venues for Jewish artists to display and sell their work through periodic self-sponsored shows throughout the metropolitan area..

Now, ArtSites Gallery will be the only retail source for purchasing handcrafted Judaic art made exclusively by local artists. Judaic items include tallitot (prayer shawls), kippot, chuppot (wedding canopies), ketubot (marriage contracts), ark curtains, hanukkiot (menorahs), challah and matzah covers, seder plates, candlesticks, kiddush cups, mezuzot and tzedakah boxes

Through the years, the group has grown from an original core of ten to a vibrant, creative group of more than 30 artists working in glass, painting, jewelry, photography, pottery and fiber. In addition to maintaining a permanent retail location, members of the group also plan to hold classes in various crafts throughout the year that will be open to the community.

For more information on the group or the gallery, contact Shirley Waxman (301-299-5526), Tamah Graber (301-871-3133) or Angie Hersh (301-293-0873). Visit our website at www.artsitesjudaicguild.org to find out about the individual artists and to see more of their work.
