Local Church Members to Visit Tikvat Israel for Evening of Jewish Culture and Food.........posted Apr 22, 2009
Congregation Tikvat Israel in Rockville will hold a Cultural Diversity Program for a half dozen neighboring churches to learn Jewish cultural expressions of music, art, crafts, dance and ethnic foods.
The unusual event will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 at the synagogue, 2200 Baltimore Road, Rockville.
Avy Ashery, program coordinator and a member of the synagogue's Adult Education Committee, calls this the first program of its kind in the Washington, D.C., area to be run by any synagogue.
Ashery will start off the program in the synagogue sanctuary with a short presentation, including music clips. He will comment about the music and answer questions.
Then the participants will move to the Artsites Gallery, which has a permanent exhibit space at the synagogue, to view various pieces of Jewish art and crafts.
The event then moves to the synagogues social hall for Israeli dancing, hosted by dance master Moshe Shem Tov.
The cultural event concludes with Jewish refreshments with TIs religious school director, Tamar Weinsweig, providing explanations of the foods and their origins.
The churches that are planning to attend include St. Judes Catholic Church, Crusader Lutheran Church, Rockville United Church, Twinbrook Baptist Church and Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. The latter is located across the street from Tikvat Israel. Individuals affiliated with other area churches also are welcome to participate.
There is no admission charge, but reservations would be appreciated by calling the synagogue at 301-762-7338 at least a day in advance.
