Softballers Slide Into 21st Place in 2009 Synagogue League's Final Standings.........posted Jun 17, 2009
After opening on a promising note, the Tikvat Israel men’s softball team allowed its 2009 season to slip and slide away as the team dropped to 21st position in the final 24-team standings.
TI completed the wet spring campaign with a 2-12 won-loss record in the Montgomery County Synagogue Softball League after starting in April with splits in its first weekend doubleheaders against B’nai Israel White and Ohev Shalom.
But from then on, the TI team, coached by Wil Hochman, never again saw victory, dashing all hopes for improvement over its 14th place finish in the league standings in 2008. TI placed 19th in both 2007 and 2006 in the synagogue league.
Hochman was again unavailable for comment, but veteran player Warren Berger summed up the team’s feelings. "Most games have been close, but it's like the (Washington) Nationals -- anything that can go wrong, has, and we keep losing games," he said.
TI dropped doubleheaders this spring to the following area synagogues: Kehilat Shalom, Bnai Shalom Blue, Washington Hebrew Congregation, Temple Emanuel and Beth El Grey.
Only the top 16 teams among the 24 participating shuls advance to the post-season synagogue tournament.
Hochman welcomes interest from newcomers (sorry, men only, over the age of 18) who would like to play for the softball team in 2010. Call him at 301-460-7394 for a one-year player contract.
