Boy Scout Crafts Prayer Benches at TI to Earn Eagle Award.........posted Mar 5, 2009

David Friedland
A member of Boy Scout Troop 1948, sponsored by Tikvat Israel, was awarded the prestigious Eagle Scout at its Court of Honor on March 15 at the synagogue.

David Friedland, 16, of Potomac, Md., attained Eagle Scout, Boy Scouting's highest achievement, based on years of participation in the scouting program, hard work, demonstrated leadership and service.

For his Eagle Scout project, David constructed prayer benches at the rear of the sanctuary at TI. This involved obtaining the appropriate permissions and approvals from both the synagogue and the Boy Scouts, designing the benches, obtaining the materials and tools, organizing fellow scouts to help and directing the project.

"David's Scout Spirit has made him an excellent candidate for this award," said Raymond Horn, scoutmaster of Tikvat Israel's troop.

Troop 1948 currently has several Life Scouts working on their Eagle Award, as well as a growing number of younger Scouts who are enjoying the outdoor activities and starting their journey. The Troop meets weekly on Sunday evenings at TI and goes on camping trips every month, including summer camp. The troop is open to boys 11-18 who would like to explore Scouting in a Jewish context. One doesn't need to be a TI member to join the troop.
