High Holy Day Services
On the High Holy Days we offer both:
- Traditional services in the Social Hall - These traditional participatory High Holiday services will be conducted by Rabbi Howard Gorin and Cantor Rochelle Helzner on both days of Rosh Hashanah, and on Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur. We will be using the new Mahzor Lev Shalem. This just-published prayerbook for the High Holidays is the first new majzor for the Conservative Movement in almost 40 years. It represents a syntesis of the fruits of historical scholarship and a far-reaching spiritual vision, thus linking study and prayer, and offers myriad opportunities for an inspriational engagement with the liturgy. Interested congregants can get an advance look at the new mahzor by visiting the synagogue office.
- Hatkhalot - The New Beginnings Service in the Sanctuary led by Richard Lederman. Using the new Majzor as our basic framework, we have developed an innovative combination of traditional and non-traditional elements exploring the High Holiday liturgy and its themes.
Following up on our very well-received alternative High Holiday services from last year, a group of members of Tikvat Israel have come together to organize non-traditional services for the First Day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. On these mornings, the services will run from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Following the basic framework from an alternative High Holiday Machzor published by the Marlboro (NJ) Jewish Center, we have developed an innovative combination of traditional and non-traditional elements exploring the High Holiday Liturgy and its themes, including:
- Both traditional and non-traditional interactive singing by the congregation
- Traditional melodies and prayers for part of the service
- Meditation to enhance prayers such as the Amidah and the Shema
- An abbreviated Torah reading
- A unique approach to the recitation of the Haftarah
- Creative and thought-provoking readings and discussions
- Yom Kippur Yizkor
