Jerusalem (K/1) – Today parashat hashavuah was Vayakhel. Bezalel organized the Jewish people in building the Mishkan. Each tribe donated their gold, silver and other materials to build and furnish the Mishkan. After we learned about the parash, I asked the class to build their on version of the Mishkan out of Legos. In Hebrew we learned the letter Bet and two words that begin with Bet; Bayit (house) and Beit Knesset (Synagogue).
Haifa (2/3) – Today in class we spent some time reviewing our Hebrew letters and vowels before learning two new letters and a new vowel. Today we learned the letters Kaf and Koof and the vowel that makes the “oo” sound. Hebrew consonants and vowels can get really tricky because a lot of them look similar. Our students are doing an outstanding job identifying the correct letters and sounds when blending words together.
After break, we spoke about the parshat hashavuah – Vayakhel. In the parasha, Moses gives the instructions on how to build the Mishkan. The instructions are very detailed even down to the materials the Israelites need to use. This parasha sparked a conversation about who wrote the Torah and Mitzvot. I explained to the class that different groups of people believe different things, and that it was up to them to decide which belief they agreed with.
