These came through our listserv, following the fabulous book sale held at TI last Sunday:
Chaverim,
The book sale was a great success, thanks to the hard work of our dedicated volunteers! We sold more than 3,000 books, enhanced the Jewish libraries of our fellow congregants and the wider Jewish community, brought many new Jewish people through our doors from all parts of the community, and raised money for our shul.
I would like to thank Rabbi Gorin for his pursuit of high-quality Jewish books, which made this sale such a special one for our community and the wider Jewish community. It takes a lot of experience and networking to get the best books for a sale. And I am grateful to Rabbi Gorin for sharing his experience with us.
I would especially like to thank the nearly 70 volunteers who showed up at every turn to schlep, sort, price, straighten, re-stock, serve as cashiers, and share their good humor with me.
And thanks go as well to Amy Matathias who posted the event on numerous listservs and to Nancy Matheson who got us listed in the Washington Post, the Washington Jewish Week, and other publications.
Hope you enjoy the new additions to your library. Yasher koach to all!
Warmly,
Felicia
In response, the rabbi replied:
I want to thank Felicia for her hard work and, even more so, for her encouragement. Without the latter, there would have been no book sale.
The gross was 20% more than last year’s sale. More than dollars and cents, though, Felicia is correct in assessing the significance of the sale – not the least of it is that it is one of the few community-wide events that brings in people from across the spectrum of Jewish identity.
The three sales we have held – 2010-2012 – have enhanced Tikvat Israel’s reputation in the community. Book sellers appreciate the quality of the experience and individual buyers know that they can get good books at bargain prices.
Yasher Koach to all!
And, a final note from our fellow congregant, Louise:
Everyone worked very hard, and it showed. It was well planned and well executed, the book buyers appreciated it. There was great food too, a rarity at used book sales so people stayed longer and took a second look. Yasher Koah to everyone, but especially Felicia and the Rabbi who put in long hours preparing to make it the success it turned out to be.
