New Torah Covers to be Dedicated for High Holidays at TI

You have probably noticed during High Holiday services that the Torah scroll covers used specially during the holidays are old, worn and fraying. These mantels date back many years, and they need to be replaced.

To provide us with bright, new up-to-date scroll covers that will enhance our observance of the holidays, the congregation has commissioned fabric artist Shirley Waxman to design and produce four new covers for use during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. She is a long-time member of Tikvat Israel and an internationally renowned fabric designer and fabricator.

This is going to be a community effort. Just as the wall hanging and panels in the sanctuary were handmade by many members of our congregation, Shirley is working with volunteers again to create our new scroll covers. Under her guidance, several members of the congregation are constructing pieces of the covers that Shirley will assemble.

The first of these beautiful covers was on display during services on Shavuot and at the congregational meeting on June 8. All four will be dedicated on the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah.

Members of the congregation will have a chance to be part of this community project even without skills as a sewer or stitcher. Members and friends can help by dedicating a cover or portion of one. Each cover will have a separate dedication, and you can direct your contribution to the cover of your choice.

The four scroll covers will be dedicated to:

  • Jesse and Marian Kaiser: To honor their many years of devoted service to our congregation in many capacities and the many voluntary responsibilities they have taken on our behalf.
  • Our Youth Groups: To help connect our young members to our faith, our history and Israel and to ensure the next generation of Jews is part of the Jewish community.
  • Our Clergy: To show our appreciation to Rabbi David Abramson and Cantor Rochelle Helzner for their leadership and for providing  beautiful and meaningful services throughout the year.
  • Our Congregation: To give you an opportunity to personalize your contribution to honor members of your own family or friends or to remember family and friends who have passed away.

Information how you can contribute to the dedication of these Torah covers will be sent to all members shortly. For more information, contact Sam Gilston or Aaron Mannes.
