Your partner in Jewish learning,

Sunday’s Pre-Chanukah programming included:
  • Station One: Dreidel playing/ learning about the Israeli sivivon (Hebrew for dreidel) that has a Pey referencing the miracle happened occurring in Israel!
  • Station Two: Chanukah Candle Box decorating.  We included two candles for the first night.  Need the blessings?
  • Station Three: K-2 students heard Judah Who Always Said “No!” by Harriet K. Feder, 5th/6th Graders heard Hanukkah at Valley Forge by Stephen Krensky.
The three groups each reviewed the two miracles of Chanukah, a) one days oil lasting eight days and b) the small weak Maccabees defeating the Greeks.

The older students were able to relate the current refugee crisis to the Polish Jewish immigrant soldier who George Washington met at Valley Forge.  The soldier explains his gratitude for religious freedom as he can freely celebrate Chanukah.  George Washington relates to the soldier’s explanation of Chanukah with his own battle to resist another cruel enemy, the British army.

Kitah Alef (K-2)
Teacher: Limor Dahan

Sunday we:
-continued to review Hebrew letter recognition
-worked on sequencing of the Alef Bet from Alef to tav
-worked on a puzzle to review the Hebrew word sivivon, (dreidel) in a puzzle-connected the image to the first letter of a Hebrew word (therefore reviewed Hebrew Hanukah phrases)
-It was great to see the kids helping each other with the activities!

Kitah Bet (3-4)
Teacher: Meirav Shahar

Sunday we:
-sang our welcome songs
-read the story “The Ziz and the Hanukkah Miracle”

Our tzedakah total as of today: $161.82!….Lets keep that going!

Kitah Gimel (5-6)
Teacher: Yosef Landy

Sunday we:
-discussed what a miracle is and brought up examples from the Torah-watched the video of Hanukkah and reviewed the miracles that occurred during the time of the Maccabees
-came up examples of everyday miracles.
-explored a how a hate crime brought the community together in Billings, Montana (video clip)
-debated over whether a miracle can be seen by someone who doesn’t have faith in a greater power
-briefly talked about Hanukkah traditions and why we light the menorah each night of Hanukkah.
-played Hanukkah Hangman during snack

Questions:

1) Chanukkah is sometimes referred to as the “Festival of Lights”. Why do you think that is? There is no right or wrong answer – it’s up to you. To help answer the question, think about how Jews put their menorahs on display during Chanukkah.
2) Since we don’t have the same connection to Hashem as our ancestors did, we can’t hear Hashem. But with faith and belief, we can see some of the miracles that he performs daily. What do you think is a miracle? Sometimes we may not think of something so basic to be considered a miracle, but in a way it is. Can you think of one thing that can be considered a miracle? How is it a miracle?
