Atid Learning Center Update Jan. 17, 2017

Shalom Atid Families,

As we look to this coming weekend, we have several transitions.  On Friday, our nation will witness the inauguration of a new president and on Saturday, we will transition from the book of Genesis to the book of Exodus.  As you speak with your children about the inauguration, here is a resource guide created by the Jewish Federation’s Department of Jewish Life and Learning.

In this week’s Parsha, Moses shows he will not tolerate injustice.  Three times, he intervenes on behalf of a weak person oppressed by a stronger one.  First, an Israelite beaten by an Egyptian, then an Israelite being beaten by another Israelite, and then a Midianite woman harassed by shepherds. Discuss with your child relationships they have with peers at school, they may witness bullying, be a part of bullying or be a victim.  Moses provides a strong example of the Jewish imperative to “Do not stand idly by.” Leviticus 19:16 We are not allowed to passively witness others being wronged.  We are obligated to stand up and speak out if we see others being mistreated.

  • As a family discuss what it means to stand up to a bully.
  • Discuss resources (parents/teachers/ camp counselors etc.) for getting help if they witness or are bullied.
  • Judaism values chesed “acts of loving kindness,” what are some ways to show others Chesed?
  • For more resources on talking with your kids about bullying https://www.stopbullying.gov/prevention/talking-about-it/
