The Billy Jonas Band loves to engage and delight both young and adult audiences and it did just that on March 19 at Tikvat Israel. The band used its homemade “industrial re-percussion” instruments, vocal harmonies, piano, guitar and bass to create a memorable experience for all.
At the afternoon concert, Michelle Sobel, TI’s ECC director, introduced the Billy Jonas Band to families with children. The band delighted the crowd and brought audience members on stage to participate in making funky family folk music.
During the evening show, Cantor Rochelle Helzner introduced the band to a crowd of 200, slightly older than the afternoon’s audience. The band combined its secular music with Judaic tunes. Helzner joined Jonas on several songs, lending vocal harmonies to the band.

“Kol Han ‘shamah was beautifully done and my favorite, and I had heard it at several shabbat services leading up to the concert,” remarked concert attendee Amy Matathias.
Mary Wagner served as chief organizer of the concert, which serves as the largest single-event fund-raising affair on the Tikvat Israel calendar. Sponsors of the show were treated to a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream reception following the performance.
