Congregants Coordinate Food Pantry Help at Manna

TI volunteers at Manna Food Center on Dec. 30 were, from left, Maya Smith, Ellen Smith, Hannah Smith, Jeff Smith, Marsha Fabel, Marilyn Greenwood, Michael Greenwood and Art Fabel.

Tikvat Israel members have been volunteering their time to help Manna Food Center prepare food packages for Montgomery County residents who are struggling to afford food, housing, and other basic needs.

Congregants Art and Marsha Fabel launched the synagogue’s relationship with the non-profit agency several months ago and are coordinating additional volunteer help among congregants. So far, Tikvat Israel volunteers have prepared food packages at the Manna warehouse on three occasions (in November, December and January). Participants included the Fabels, Marilyn Greenwood, Michael Greenwood, the Smith family (Jeff, Ellen, Hannah and Maya) and Judith Davis.

The next volunteer session is planned for Friday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon.

“I know a lot of our members would prefer doing this on a Sunday. But Sundays are so popular that they are booked up at Manna for about three months,” said Art Fabel, who added he will schedule a Sunday volunteer session at a later date.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing as the work takes place indoors. Rubber soles are recommended.

Contact Fabel at to help at the future session at Manna, which is located at 9311 Gaither Road in Gaithersburg, a short distance from Shady Grove Road.
