National touring artists Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway have been pleasing audiences and speaking out for justice for decades, with others and with each other, and have developed a deep friendship over this time. Both have been very active with Phil Ochs Song Nights around the country and with working for racial justice, including singing in Selma on the 50th anniversary of the historic crossing of the Edmund Pettis Bridge. In October 2016 they went on a pilgrimage together to explore their individual personal connections to the history of racial oppression and racial justice. This led to their development of “Deeper than the Skin” presentations – workshops, worship services, and concerts – all based on this work.
Reggie Harris, a Woodrow Wilson Scholar, is the Music Education Director of the Living Legacy Project, co-leading tours through the hallowed Civil Rights ground of the South. Solo, and in the duo Kim & Reggie Harris, he has led hundreds of programs on race and social justice. Greg Greenway, one third of Brother Sun, was a part of the planning committee (at Reggie’s request) of Marching in the Arc of Justice, the Unitarian Universalist conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma Voting Rights Action. Together and individually, Reggie and Greg have brought the issue of Race before audiences all across North America.
The FOCUS event will be staged at Tikvat Israel; light refreshments will be available for purchase during intermission. Advance tickets are available through FOCUS’s website. FOCUS member pricing for tickets purchased at the door will be extended to Tikvat Israel members.
FOCUS is a non-profit organization whose mission “is to bring folk and acoustic music to a growing audience through performance, education and participation in the musical folk art.” Tikvat Israel and FOCUS have agreed to a partnership to bring folk music concerts to Tikvat Israel and the Montgomery County community.
