Folk Concert Dec. 3 Features Two Trios

Tikvat Israel will host a folk music concert on Sunday, Dec. 3  (minyan at 7 pm) titled a “Duo of Trios,” featuring the groups No Good Sister and Lulu’s Fate. The 7:30 pm show (minyan is at 7 pm) is part of the Focus concert series.

In late 2012, a mom, a teacher, and a waitress gathered in a small Philadelphia apartment specifically to hear what their voices might sound like when joined together in three part harmony. By the end of the night, Maren Sharrow, Jess McDowell, and Meaghan Kyle knew they had something special in the effortless way their three very different voices blended together in a harmony that was both timeless and exciting. No Good Sister was born.

Lulu’s Fate is a trio based in the Washington, DC area, performing a variety of traditional American music as well as original and “new traditional” songs and tunes. The group is comprised of Tom Espinola (guitar, mandolin & vocals), Kristen Jones (cello & vocals) and Kara Bolling (vocals). Lulu’s Fate combines virtuosic instrumentals with tight three-part harmonies to create new interpretations of traditional Appalachian music. They also mix in a variety of country blues, Dixieland, sea chanteys, southern string band tunes, and covers ranging from Hank Williams to Tom Waits. In addition to several original songs and instrumental tunes by Tom Espinola, Lulu’s Fate also features songs by other contemporary “new traditional” performers.

The FOCUS event will be staged at Tikvat Israel; light refreshments will be available for purchase during intermission. Advance tickets are available through FOCUS’s website.  FOCUS member pricing for tickets purchased at the door will be extended to Tikvat Israel members.

FOCUS is a non-profit organization whose mission “is to bring folk and acoustic music to a growing audience through performance, education and participation in the musical folk art.” Tikvat Israel and FOCUS have agreed to a partnership to bring folk music concerts to Tikvat Israel and the Montgomery County community.
