On Sunday, February 12, the Outdoor Havurah decided on an indoor outing to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Air and Space Museum’s Annex near Dulles Airport. The Udvar-Hazy Center is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC. There are two huge hangars, the Boeing Aviation Hangar and the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar, which display thousands of aviation and space artifacts that could not be accommodated at the Museum on the mall.
The group viewed some Wright Brothers’ biplanes, many World War II planes, including the Enola Gay and many of the earliest space capsules. Several members stayed to enjoy showings at the IMAX theater.
For some members of the Outdoor Havurah, seeing one of the Super Sonic Transports that took passengers across the ocean at twice the speed of sound was a highlight, as well as seeing the SR-71 Blackbird that used to fly over the Soviet Union at three times the speed of sound!
