By unanimous voice vote, Tikvat Israel congregants removed Jonathan Solomon and Rodney Matheson from further synagogue leadership during the so-called Un-Presidential Caucus, conducted June 26. It was a lighthearted affair in TI’s social hall to roast the two recent co-presidents while calling attention to their accomplishments during an effective term that ended in January 2015. A series of congregants delivered good-natured indictments against the pair from a stage decorated with patriotic symbols, while the “Honorable Bernie Slanders,” played by John Melmed, provided the final call to un-elect Solomon and Matheson, who laughed right along with the jokes at their expense. The pair did leave with parting gifts — colorful handmade kippahs from fiber artist Shirley Waxman. The event, with plenty of refreshments for caucus voters, raised funds for shul operations.
